The noise, sourceless at first, becomes unbearable silence, when we find ourselves to be excluded from Stephens sonic escape. I take it he wanted to illuminate the absurdity, of rather wanting dead silence, than the soft, mind-wandering timbres of the piano.

Whatever the meaning, this is one of my favorite pieces.
